Systems Integration and HL7 - following on from the unit on ‘networking care’and drawing on concepts introduced in many preceding units, this unit focuses on the methods available for systems integration and the use of integration engines. The details of how medical messages are constructed are explored, looking at the message specifications, elements and segments, and with particular emphasis on the use of HL7 as a messaging environment. The essence of data modelling, and the concepts and principles embedded in V2 and V3 are explored, with examples. XML and the versatility of the ‘tagging’ methodology is discussed in the context of v3; the added value of the V3 clinical document architecture is also discussed.
